Chapter 95 of 110
Second Night Drum
The second night drum sounded across Jinling like a struck gong.
It rolled out over the roofs from the drum tower in the central square, nine slow beats, and each one shook a little dust from the eaves of the staff room and set the water trembling in the washing basin by the door. Dogs barked in the lanes. For a long moment after the last beat the whole city seemed to hold its breath.
Lanterns flared along the merchant avenues. Convoys moved. Slaves in veils and collars climbed into carriages behind masked masters. Wang Fengrui's procession was the largest — association leader, fat with rings, mother-daughter set veiled at his son's side, guards in merchant colors. Yan Chi's staff line moved in their shadow toward the east door.
The celebration hall's banners caught the drum's echo and seemed to shiver. Twenty years, theme night, slave games. Yan Chi adjusted his mask and felt his pulse in his throat and stepped toward the side check with Wang Xuan's token burning in his sleeve like a talisman.
Yan Chi slipped into the staff line with other waiters, mask on, tray empty, cock already half-interested from anticipation alone. The Merchant Association's celebration hall rose ahead in lantern glory — wide steps, rich banners marking twenty years, guards checking invitations at the main doors and checking staff marks at the side.
He passed the side check with Wang Xuan's arranged token.
The guard at the staff door was bored and thorough. He checked the token, checked Yan Chi's face under the mask, checked his hands for weapons, and waved him through with a grunt. The staff corridor smelled of wine and sweat and roasting meat. A senior steward barked orders.
Yan Chi found a place in the line of waiters moving trays toward the guest floor and let the current take him. Behind his mask his eyes were hungry. Behind his ribs Cuckold Partner sat coiled. Thirty points, fifth stage, four slots.
The corridor floor was slick with spilled stock. Steam boiled from a doorway on the left where a cook in a stained apron was shouting at a boy over a copper pot, and on the right a girl in a grey tunic ran past carrying a stack of folded napkins taller than her head. Someone had chalked the order of the courses on a board beside the door in a fast slanting hand, and the waiters read it as they passed, lips moving.
Staff corridors ran behind the glory: kitchens steaming, wine casks sweating, senior stewards snapping at boys who stared too long toward the guest floor's laughter. Yan Chi kept his gaze trained on tray and floor the way Wang Xuan had drilled in ten ruthless minutes. A senior waiter shoved a pitcher into his hands.
"Second terrace. Do not spill on anyone richer than you — which is everyone. If a guest asks for assistance with a slave, you assist. If a guest asks you to look away, you go blind. If a guest asks you to join a game, you check with the floor lead before you ruin your life or improve it."
Yan Chi bowed. "Understood."
He stepped from staff shadow into the edge of the guest light.
The main hall opened like a throat lined with silk. Masked men in merchant and cultivator wealth moved between low tables. Slaves of every kind knelt, stood, crawled, poured — some nearly naked, some decorated in chain and jewel, some veiled like secrets. Music threaded under conversation.
Perfume fought with the warmer smell of aroused bodies that rich rooms always grew by the second hour. Yan Chi's eyes hunted without seeming to hunt. He found enough filth to make his cock press the waiter whites anyway.
The lanterns burned in pairs along the beams, red beside white, so that the light on the floor was a pink gold that flattered every skin. Somewhere behind a painted partition a zither player worked through a slow melody, and under it a drum kept the pulse like the footfalls of something large and patient.
A merchant in a jade mask had his slave bent over a low table while he discussed grain prices with a neighbor, one hand absently stroking her bare ass between sentences. A cultivator in sect blues drank wine poured down a slave's cleavage and licked it off her nipples while the table laughed.
Two veiled beauties crawled past Yan Chi's feet on matching leashes, ankle bells chiming, and he stepped aside and kept his gaze low and watched them anyway from under his lashes. None of them were listed. None of them paid. The skill stayed silent. The night was only warming up.
Lanterns hung in ranked rows from a ceiling painted with merchant ships and fat gold coins. Low tables covered the polished floor in islands of wealth. Masked men moved between them with the unhurried greed of people who owned the city's blood. Slaves knelt with trays. Slaves stood with wine.
A masked fat elder — not Wang Xuan, older, meaner around the eyes — snapped fingers for wine. Yan Chi poured without spilling. The elder's slave, a young woman with a bit between her teeth, looked up at Yan Chi for half a heartbeat with eyes that said help or hunger; he could not tell which. He moved on — tray, bow, pour, watch.
The second terrace was a raised half-circle at the east side of the hall, three wide steps above the main floor, with a gilt railing along its edge and a dozen low tables set for the richer guests. Yan Chi worked it from the staff gap at its back, where a lacquered screen hid the stairs to the kitchens.
His pitcher held rice wine warmed to the temperature of skin. The floor lead had shown him how to carry it, the spout tilted down, the free hand tucked behind the small of his back, and how to pour in a single smooth arc without letting the wine touch the cup's rim.
A bead of sweat started under his mask at the temple and ran down in front of his ear. He did not wipe it. Waiters did not touch their faces. The pitcher grew heavy by degrees, a few ounces at a time, until the muscles of his forearm began to tremble faintly with the effort of keeping the spout steady.
A heavy man in a green mask held out his cup without looking at him. Yan Chi filled it. The man's slave knelt at his feet with a dish of candied plums balanced on her bare palms, her chest belted in two narrow bands of red leather, and every time her master reached for a plum his knuckles brushed her breast.
"Not that one," the man said, and she lifted another to his lips.
Yan Chi bowed and moved to the next table. He kept his stride short and his tray high.
Two tables along, a thin woman in a silver half-mask lay stretched on her side across a cushion with her slave's head in her lap. She had pulled her robe off one shoulder, and the slave's tongue worked slowly at her nipple while she discussed shipping routes with the man opposite her. She raised two fingers. Yan Chi poured her wine and heard the wet, patient sound of the slave's mouth the whole time he did it.
He did not look at the slave's face. He looked at the cup, the rim, the arc of wine. When he straightened, the woman's gaze passed over him in the same way it passed over the lamp stand.
The wine had a thin floral bite, and the steam from the pitcher fogged the inside of his mask whenever he bent over a cup. In the first quarter-hour he learned to pour on the exhale and straighten on the inhale, so that his breathing kept time with the work. A guest in a copper mask tapped the rim of a cup with one fingernail, and he filled it without being asked a second time, and the guest nodded without looking up from the game he was describing.
At the next table a guest asked for water. At the one after, a guest asked him to hold a slave's leash for a moment while he adjusted his belt.
He brought it in a plain glass pitcher with a slice of cucumber floating in it, and the guest drank two cups in a row without a word and then tipped the rest down the front of his slave's chest, laughing, and told her to stay still while it ran.
Yan Chi took the chain. It was warm from the man's hand and ended in a ring at the collar of a slender girl with her eyes closed and her mouth slightly open, and she knelt so still that he could hear her breathing. The man came back, took the leash without thanks, and gave the girl's hair a short tug.
The leash was a thin chain of polished steel with a leather loop at the end, and the loop had worn smooth and dark with use. He held it as he would have held a tray, loosely, with the weight of the girl's slow breathing coming up the links into his palm, and tried to think of nothing at all.
Yan Chi returned to the staff gap with his hands damp and his cock throbbing against the cloth, and refilled the pitcher from the cask the kitchen boy had left on the stair. The skill in his chest stayed silent. A merchant's slave on a chain was not a listed woman, and a perverted act among strangers was only a spectacle to him.
"Terrace two," the floor lead called, passing him on the stair without slowing. "Jade mask, third table. He wants a refill and a boy who does not stare."
"I do not stare."
"You stare at everything. Learn to do it with your eyes down." She was gone before he could answer.
Across the city-side entrance, at roughly the same stretch of evening, Yan Tian's carriage halted. Guards opened doors. A patriarch in a dark mask stepped down holding a chain. A veiled slave in gold plates and sky-blue scraps followed, plug held by qi, pussy wet, night air cool on bare ass-curves. Association greeters bowed to the invitation token and did not bow to the slave. That was the theme's first knife.
Yan Mei felt the knife of that non-bow. The greeters' eyes went over her body — plates, scraps, diamond, collar — and through her, the way eyes go through furniture. She was not Lady Yan Mei here. She was property arriving with a patriarch. The cool air made her nipples tighten under the gold. The plug held.
Yan Tian's hand on the leash was warm and sure. He led her up the wide steps under the twenty-year banners, and the music from inside rolled out to meet them.
Carriages stood two deep along the avenue below, and their lanterns turned the steps to rows of small bright fires. A steward with a staff of office called each arrival in a flat carrying voice that rolled up the stairs and in through the open doors, and each name was followed by the sound of chains, a soft general chiming that rose and fell as the guests went in.
Near the top a woman in a fox mask knelt on a cushion beside the door with her wrists bound in front of her, and a man in the same mask stooped to adjust her collar as if tying a scarf.
Yan Tian smiled behind his patriarch mask. The greeters' dismissal of his wife was the point. He led her into the foyer, chain short, and felt every eye in the entrance hall find her body and dismiss her name.
A steward took their invitation token and bowed them toward the main floor. Ankle bells chimed. The diamond winked. Yan Mei walked when the chain told her to walk, and Jinling's hungriest celebration opened around her.
Inside the foyer the air was ten degrees warmer. A brass bowl of floating flower heads stood on a stand by the pillar, and a girl in a pale tunic knelt beside it wiping the rim with a cloth. Beyond an arch the noise of the hall rose and fell like surf: laughter, a dropped cup, a slave's quick gasp cut short, a man's loud pleased voice repeating a price.
A dice cup rattled in early warm-up play behind a guest screen. A merchant tested a theme-night rule with a public squeeze and a slave gasped on the wine terrace. Yan Chi adjusted his mask and walked deeper. Yan Mei adjusted nothing and was walked deeper.
Yan Chi set a full pitcher on a terrace table and bowed. Across the hall, past silk screens and laughing masks, a chain chimed. He did not look up. Cuckold Partner sat at ten points of garden breeze and thirty total, coiled and patient.
Yan Mei stood where her husband placed her and felt a hundred eyes and held her qi and dripped against sky-blue cloth. The silk over her was thin. The night was thick.
The plug sat heavy and warm inside her, held by the thread of qi she kept wound around it, and she felt every rise of her own breath in it. Air from the doors moved across her bare back and the backs of her thighs. The gold plates were cool where they covered her nipples and warmed slowly against her skin, and the silk at her front had gone damp enough to cling.
Yan Tian's thumb moved once along the links of the chain, a small private pressure at the end of the leash, and the tug travelled down the steel to the collar and settled against the pulse at her throat.
Inside the hall, a steward announced a masked patriarch and his slave at the main floor's edge. Heads turned. Yan Mei felt the weight of a hundred merchant eyes land on her plates and scraps and diamond and collar, and the plug held, and Yan Tian's hand on the leash squeezed once.
